🔬 The Three Climate Factors

🌍 CLIMATE = The AVERAGE of weather conditions over a LONG period of time (at least 30 YEARS)!

Weather is what's happening TODAY. Climate tells us what USUALLY happens over many, many years.

Three main factors determine a region's climate. Click each card to learn more!

🗺️ Same State, Different Climates: TEXAS

See how the THREE climate factors create different climates in Texas!

🌴

Houston, TX

Humid Subtropical
  • 🌍 Latitude: Low = Warm
  • 🏔️ Elevation: ~50 ft (sea level)
  • 🌊 Water: Near Gulf of Mexico!

Result: Hot, humid summers • Mild winters • ~50" rain/year

🏜️

El Paso, TX

Desert
  • 🌍 Latitude: Similar to Houston
  • 🏔️ Elevation: ~3,700 ft (higher)
  • 🌊 Water: FAR from any ocean!

Result: Hot, dry summers • Cool winters • ~9" rain/year

🔑 Key Insight: The Gulf of Mexico (a large body of water) makes ALL the difference! Houston gets moisture from the Gulf, while El Paso is too far away to receive it.

⚠️ Remember: Weather ≠ Climate!
